InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa Receives Congressional Honors Award “Race to Save the Planet”

BORA BORA (June 18, 2007) – The trophy shelf for the InterContinental Bora Bora Resort and Thalasso-Spa continues to grow this month, as the property accepted a medal and certificate as part of the “Race to Save the Planet” award from the Asian Leaders Association, presented on June 5 in Washington, DC. The award honored hotels that are using innovative management and programs to prevent further erosion of the environment or are trying to reverse the impact of the climate crisis.

Race to Save the Planet AwardIn addition, the hotel won “Most Successful Opening” out of 42 new properties and “Best Environmental Responsibility” in the Asia Pacific region at the InterContinental Hotels Group’s Asia Pacific Leadership Convention held in Perth, Australia. InterContinental Hotels Group Worldwide CEO Andrew Coslett presented the award to Dick Bailey, owner of the InterContinental Bora Bora Resort and Thalasso-Spa Operating at 72% occupancy in its first year, the hotel’s staff has impeccably upheld guest satisfaction and had been operating well above forecasted levels. The environmental advancements of the property, including the revolutionary air conditioning system, were also recognized and awarded.

Accessible only by boat, the InterContinental Bora Bora Resort and Thalasso-Spa opened May 1, 2006 along a virgin beach on the Motu Piti Aau (meaning “two hearts in Tahitian) along the eastern side of the island. The resort’s unique innovations include an eco-friendly air-conditioning system. The world’s deepest ocean pipe (7,874 ft.) pumps ice cold deep-sea water through a titanium heat exchanger, transferring the cold into the fresh water circuit, powering the air conditioning throughout the hotel. This saves 90% of the hotel’s electricity consumption (2.5 million liters of fuel oil per year) and has no impact on the surrounding environment.

The resort is also the first hotel in French Polynesia to feature all over-water bungalows, and the first to utilize mineral-rich deep seawater from 2,500 feet below sea level in the signature treatments at the Thalassotherapy Deep Ocean Spa by Algotherm. The resort also features the first over water wedding chapel with a glass bottom floor.
